Stellar spectra
PROTEUS can use:
- Observed spectra from MUSCLES / Mega-MUSCLES and NREL (for the Sun)
- Synthetic PHOENIX spectra
By default, observed spectra are searched in:
$FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/MUSCLESβ MUSCLES / Mega-MUSCLES stars$FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/solarβ solar spectra (modern, past, future)
To see which files you have installed, run for example:
ls $FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/MUSCLES
ls $FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/solar
For PHOENIX spectra, files are stored under: $FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/PHOENIX, where each subdirectory corresponds to a metallicity / alpha combination, e.g. FeH-0.5_alpha+0.0/.
Using solar spectra
To use the modern NREL observed spectrum of the Sun, set spectrum_source = "solar" or do not set the parameter at all, and set star_name = "sun".
To use a different solar spectrum, for example a 'young sun' spectrum, there are VPL spectra available by Claire et al. (2012). In this case, set spectrum_source = "solar" and choose one of the following options for star_name:
Sun0.6GaA young sun of 0.6 Gyr ago (age ~ 4.0 Gyr)Sun1.8GaA young sun of 1.8 Gyr ago (age ~ 2.8 Gyr)Sun2.4GaA young sun of 2.4 Gyr ago (age ~ 2.2 Gyr)Sun2.7GaA young sun of 2.7 Gyr ago (age ~ 1.9 Gyr)Sun3.8GaA young sun of 3.8 Gyr ago (age ~ 800 Myr)Sun4.4GaA young sun of 4.4 Gyr ago (age ~ 200 Myr)Sun5.6GyrA future sun of an age of 5.6 GyrSunModernA modern solar spectrum, can be chosen as an alternative to the NREL spectrum listed above.

Using a (Mega-)MUSCLES observed spectrum
PROTEUS can use observed stellar spectra from the MUSCLES and Mega-MUSCLES surveys. To use one of these observed spectra:
- Set
spectrum_source = "muscles" - Set
star_nameto one of the keys listed below (these names must match the installed spectrum filenames / dataset keys; many targets have multiple common aliases, but PROTEUS expects the specificstar_namestring shown here).
By default, PROTEUS looks for MUSCLES/Mega-MUSCLES spectra under:
$FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/MUSCLES
Files are saved as <star_name>.txt, e.g. trappist-1.txt.

Using a PHOENIX synthetic spectrum
To use a Med-Res PHOENIX synthetic spectrum, set:
spectrum_source = "phoenix"
PHOENIX spectra are stored under:
- $FWL_DATA/stellar_spectra/PHOENIX/
Each subdirectory corresponds to a metallicity / alpha combination, e.g.
FeH-0.5_alpha+0.0/.
Parameters
PHOENIX models are defined on a grid in:
Teff(K) β effective temperaturelog_g(dex) β surface gravityFeH(dex) β metallicityalpha(dex) β alpha enhancement
In addition, PROTEUS needs the stellar radius:
radius(Rβ)
This is used to scale the model spectrum (surface flux) to the flux at 1 AU.
You can set these under star.mors in your config file.
Defaults / fallbacks
- If
FeHand/oralphaare not set, they default to solar (0.0). - If
Teff,log_g, and/orradiusare not set, they are estimated by the stellar evolution module (mors) from the stellar mass (if provided).
Using a custom stellar spectrum
If you prefer to use your own stellar spectrum, you can input its filepath under the parameter star_path. Make sure you input its absolute path, even if it is in the $FWL_DATA directory. NOTE: this parameter will override all other stellar spectrum config parameters!
There are a few things to take into account when using a custom stellar spectrum:
- The file should be a two-column ASCII file, with the first column the wavelength in nm, and the second column the flux in erg/s/cm^2/nm. Headers should be indicated with
#. - The spectrum must be scaled to 1 AU.
Surfaces
Single-scattering albedo data taken from Hammond et al., (2024): Zenodo data. Available options can be found by running the command:
ls $FWL_DATA/surface_albedos/Hammond24
Exoplanet population data
These are obtained from the DACE PlanetS database (Parc et al., 2024).
Mass-radius relations
These are obtained from Zeng et al., 2019.
